Bunions are the structural anomaly of the bones and joints between the foot and the big toe.  A bunion is a prominent bump on the inside of the foot around the big toe; the bump is actually a bone that’s protruding towards the inside of the foot.  Symptoms include swelling, tenderness and inflammation on the side of the big toe.  These symptoms make it difficult for the patient to walk correctly.  Bunions are common amongst women and are usually caused by improper footwear.  Tight narrow shoes cause the foot to take the shape of the shoe leading to bunions.  This deformity can cause women to buy larger improper fitting shoes to fit the bunion.
